NATURALLY: TREAD SOFTLY ON THE PLANET

VIKRAM SONI | HARPER COLLINS

FOREWARD BY DANIEL GOLEMAN, AUTHOR OF ‘EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE’

‘Vikram Soni has for many years been a leader in the fight against the destruction of the natural environment in his home country, India, and elsewhere throughout the planet. In this book he describes some of the exquisite balances which nature has evolved in the course of Earth’s four billion year history, and makes an eloquent plea for a kind of technology much more respectful and symbiotic with them than what we have today.’

Antony J.Leggett, Winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics, 2003.

"In an age characterised more than ever by extremes of opinion ranging from techno-euphoria to doomsday catatonia, with little in between that is credible, this book presents a refreshingly sane and practical path for humanity to carve out a modus vivendi with Nature and to design a future that is fulfilling for all and destructive for none."

Building Bridges Between Science Conservation and Natural Wisdom | Vikram Soni | TEDxJGU

Professor Vikram Soni amalgamates the idea of boundaries with bridges by speaking about the simple ways in conserving the environment. From performing a live experiment to speaking about the troubles he faced while trying to conserve the environment makes us ponder upon the wonders of the environment and its conservation. Vikram Soni is presently Emeritus Professor at Jamia Millia and JNU. He was born and grew up in Nainital. Starting his education at St Joseph's School, Professor Soni has studied, taught and done research at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Sussex University, the University of Madras, the Institut de Recherche Fondamental at Saclay in Paris, amongst others. He has worked in High Energy Physics and Astrophysics. Alongside, seeing the tragic shrinking of India’s rich jungle wilderness, he has always worked quietly for conservation. In Physics, he has made seminal contributions in our understanding of phenomena ranging from topological structures in physics to the nucleon and neutron stars and from the matter-antimatter puzzle to evolutionary networks. Significantly, he has produced a body of work in Science in the Public Interest that deals with non invasive, ‘Preserve and Use’, solutions to contemporary problems, particularly the water problems. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Vikram Soni’s book, Naturally – Tread Softly on the Planet,is an impassioned plea to save Planet Earth from the disastrous consequences that are predictable, given our present extravagant and unthinking use of resources that can only result in a degradation of both the planet and our existence on it. The balance provided by nature is being systematically toppled despite the warnings of environmentalists.

But there is more to the book than just this complaint. Starting the story with how human patterns of life evolved and took distinctive cultural forms, VikramSoni points to where it is leading, and that by all counts seems to be terminal. But he does also suggest how this prediction can be averted by timely action in using resources judiciously and with greater circumspection. All this is argued in an easy readable style.

The book provokes the reader into assessing the damage to the planet and helps us explore alternative ways of living. These could be potentially as fulfilling as the ones we currently live by, if not more so. All this is done whilst also underlining the urgency of changing our relationship with the world we live in.
